Home improvements are becoming increasingly popular and there is a lot you can do for under £5,000.

Before going ahead with any work you should think about the purpose of your planned improvements. Do you intend to stay in the property and enjoy the result, or are you trying to make your house more saleable? This will determine how you use your budget. Also consider whether you have the ability, time and inclination to do any of the work yourself. This can cut costs but we have all heard DIY disaster stories and some jobs are best left to professionals.

Redecorating is probably one of the simplest options. A coat of paint is cheap and will instantly freshen up any room. Remember to stick to neutral colours if you are planning to sell. In some cases the walls will not be good enough for paint, or you may prefer the interest a design will bring to a room, so paper will be necessary. Wall paper is more expensive and the job is more involved so you may need a decorator.

A garden makeover could include anything from adding a few interesting or colourful plants and containers, to a full scale redesign. Simply trimming hedges and trees will increase space and light, while looking after the lawn and replacing that broken fence will smarten the place up. Adding a patio for outdoor living will encourage use of your garden. Get quotes from any workmen before they start and remember your budget may need to include garden furniture.

Built in furniture, for example in bedrooms or a home office, will help make the most of the space available. There are many companies offering this type of service with a wide choice of styles, colours and finish to suit your budget. The price will usually include a design service to advise you.

New furniture, carpets or other flooring, and accessories will of course transform a room. You may well combine this with redecorating to complete the new look. Retailers on the high street and online offer a huge choice for all tastes and budgets. Many will also offer interior design advice free if you spend over a set amount and they will normally offer options for financing your project with a cheap loan or interest-free credit terms.
