The lakeside cottage may be one of the last, best retreats that we have in this high-tech world of online shopping, blackberries, and text messages. We tend to spend the vast majority of our time these days locked away in offices or cooped up in the home during the long winter months just learning to relax on some deck furniture next to some lake and just let the stress wash away with the breeze. Still, the creatures of habit that we all are, we tend to let the deck or outdoor furniture remain unoccupied at the cottage retreat in favor of the air-conditioned bug-free atmosphere of the indoors. Shame on all of us!!

The classic Adirondack chair and the lakeside cottage are the perfect complement to one another—like a glove to the hand or however that saying goes! Far too often, when we do happen to go online shopping for deck furniture for our priceless retreat along the lake, we come across chairs, loungers, and swings that are just—well, cheaply made and mass-produced. Far too many furniture makers have decided that cheaper is better and made profits a higher priority than the comfort of their customers.

Yes, all new outdoor furniture looks “purty” in the store or on the website. However, these chairs, tables, and accessories were not made with comfort in mind—they were made to bring in as much money as possible. With the classic Adirondack chair, however, there are still companies that seem to remember that this elegant piece of outdoor furniture was designed and created for one purpose: relaxation.

The sloping back on a traditional Adirondack chair just seems to be at the perfect angle for sitting back and enjoying time with friends and family. It is nothing to go outdoors to the deck with a good book in hand and try reading only to find yourself waking up an hour later—yes, the classic Adirondack chair is precisely that comfortable! The wide armrests are there for you to place a cold drink, book, or whatever—while armrests on those cheap outdoor chairs and loungers are barely wide enough for your arms, let alone anything else!

So, the next time you find yourself up to the cottage and wondering why no one is outside enjoying the scenery and fresh air—take a good look at the deck furniture. If it isn’t filled with classic Adirondack chairs, you have your answer!
