Anytime you make a purchase for your home, you are making some kind of investment, and this is certainly true of furniture. When most people think of do it yourself projects, they think of contruction. Decorating is a key component of diy, and selecting good furniture is just as important as building cabinets. Your furniture will become one of your valuable possessions, a piece that reflects your tastes and goals to all those who visit your home. FUrniture also requires a considerable investment of money in order to purchase, so you will want to be sure that the pieces you select are worth their value both now and in the future. One key in the buying process is to be able to tell a well-made piece of furniture from one that is poorly constructed.

There are several key areas to look at when trying to determine if a piece of furniture is worth the money. The first is in the structure of the pieces. All the parts that make up the piece should be joined together securely, without a noticeable mark, and should not wiggle when touched. if you are purchasin an item such as a table or a desk, make sure that the piece is balanced well. One way to find out is to put your hand down on the center of the table and rock it back and forth; if the piece is well balanced, it will stand firm. Remember that any drawers and cupboards that come inside the piece should open and close with ease, and latch securely.

The outside finish of a piece of furniture is another key feature. If the piece is an upholstered item, such as a sofa or chair, check the details of the tailoring. There should not be any loose threads, and any trimming or buttons should be fastened down very well, in such a manner that they do not stand out. Exposed wood should be sanded and finished smoothly, so that there are absolutely no rough patches on it.

When you go out looking for furniture, don't be in a rush. Really, you should never buy any piece on the first visit. Instead, walk around the store and have a look at what you feel will fit in well with your decor as well as what suits your budget and what looks well made. Take the time to examine all the aspects listed above in order to determine quality. Remember that it is pretty easy to create a piece of furniture that looks good even from close up, but a careful inspection will show flaws that mean the piece will not stand the test of time. The last thing you want to do is go back to the furniture store a year or two later and drop even more money!
