There are all sorts of problems that can occur with ones house, and one issue that needs to be addressed as soon as it comes up is damage to your floors or walls. Delaying home repair projects on these areas can end up causing extensive damage to your house that will cost you much more time, money, and sanity in the end than you would have expended by dealing with the situation right away. Here are some problems that occur in these areas, and what you can do about them.

Walls in the basement will sometimes crack over time, especially if your house is built on a slope or ground that is somewhat unstable. Recurring cracks are an issue that you will need to have examined with the cooperation of an inspector, as it could be indicative of a problem as serious as an insufficient foundation, but in the meantime you can fix those cracks to prevent water seeping into the walls and floors. Try applying some waterproof masonry sealer, a solution that once mixed will act like cement to plug any cracks. Remember to clean the whole area before applying the sealer for maximum effect, if there is too much matter interfering the sealant will not bond with the walls and stay in place.

Masonry paint is another way to protect concrete walls and keep outside material from leaking in. Again, the areas need to be thoroughly cleaned prior to application of the paint in order for the paint to be effective. Effective cleaning, in the case of brick walls or concrete walls that have porous holes, will mean that a wire brush is needed for scrubbing them. You will also need to add a couple of coats of primer to the area in order to smooth it out and make it easier for the paint to adhere to the surface.

Another common blot on the overall appearance of a home is the presence of stains. Stains can be caused by many things, but the most severe ones on a home come from smoke, usually that which comes from cigarettes. These stains need to be scrubbed off the area where they are located with a lot of hard work and the combination of bleach and water or ammonia solutions.

While stains usually will not spread and negatively affect other areas, other types of problems will. Leaks in ceilings, walls, or faucets will lead to long term water damage to floors and maybe even really severe problems such as mold and rotting structure as it accumulates over time. The best way to prevent a major problem is to engage in a simple solution immediately.
