There are few people who would be bold enough to state that birth order plays no part whatsoever in our upbringing and, ultimately, in our behaviors and attitudes in adulthood.

The fact is, how we were raised is a big influence on how we behave today as adults. But there is also the fact that where we were in the lineage of our siblings played a big part in how we were treated as children and what was expected of us as we grew.

It is not a secret that in many families the first born is treated in a much different manner than, say, the last born. Throughout history and throughout most cultures this holds true. And it has not changed all that much in recent times.

To say or to believe that birth order has no influence on how we are treated as children is simply to ignore something that has proven itself to be historically correct for generations.

On the surface, birth order may not seem like such a big deal, especially in modern times when we are all expected to rise to our own levels of success in both work and relationships. After all, isn’t it we who decide who we want to be? Yes and no.

Yes, we can often decide that we are not happy with the person we see ourselves as, and wish to make changes to better improve ourselves. No, in that it is often easier said than done.
