There are various medicines, therapies and treatments available to relieve back pain but not all of these are appropriate it depends on the person who is suffering. When dealing with back pain it is best to go to your doctor to set up a plan for that would work for your situation. Below is an account of the various medications used to treat back pain. These medications apply to a number of symptoms are not all effective to the same degree.

Drug Therapies

There are a range of drugs to help relieve back pain some are for certain conditions and others can be used for a number of issues such as inflammation muscle tension and spasms. It is best for you speak to your doctor before taking any medications as some of theses have serious side effects. Your doctor might be able to help minimize them.

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)

These are considered anti-inflammatory drugs that help reduce swelling. In small doses they can be analgesics, in large doses they reduce inflammation. Drugs of this class include Naproxen®, Ketoprofen®, aspirin, ibuprofen amongst others. The side affects are usually gastrointestinal in nature. There are new drugs like COX-@ Inhibitors under this classification that allow patients to take higher doses without as many side affects.

Acetaminophen

These are considered alternative to the NSAIDs. They have analgesics effect and are generally given to patients with acute pain but sometimes they can be used against chronic pain. This group includes Valadol, Anacin-3®, Phenaphen®, and Tylenol®

Opiods

Opiods are addictive so they are used in rare cases when immediate relief is required. Drugs such as morphine, codine, meperidine (Demerol®), Oxycontin®. are included in this group.

Muscle Relaxants

These are used for severe back pain. They help when used with Non-Steriod Antiflammory drugs. Under this classification there are medications such as methocarbamol (Robaxin®), carisoprodol (Soma®), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril®), diazepam (Valium®).
