Contact lens has come a really long way at a breath taking speed from its heavier, all eyeball covering version of 1887, when used for the first time, to breathing, flexible modern lens of the day.

Celebrities wear it for a different appearance and athletes for protection and safety. But between these two, the contact lens is extensively used by those who don’t like to wear spectacles on their day to day lives. And why not, considering the size and weight that was uncomfortable on the wearers’ eyeball due to the ‘load’ factor. Additionally, contact lens can correct certain abnormalities where spectacles fail.

What Are Contact Lenses Made Up Off?

The modern contact lenses are made for comfortable wearing and thus are made with tougher but lighter materials such as methylmethacrylate plastic discovered in the year 1938. This credit must go to Theodore E. Obrig for doing away with glass. But since this had a drawback that it did not allow tears to pass through, the later contact lenses were made to fit just the cornea and float on tears, thus made them possible to be worn throughout the day without having to remove them either for relaxing or lubricating their underside with special liquids.

Most recent ones have flexible properties to suit wearers’ focal lengths while being porous to let oxygen pass through them.

Types of Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are categorized depending on their functionalities.

1. Cosmetic contact lens
2. Corrective contact lens
3. Therapeutic contact lens

The corrective type helps correct far and short sightedness in addition to astigmatism and presbyopia. Therapeutic contact lenses are used to protect eye lens and cornea and in treatment of non refractive disorders or its management unlike the corrective type contact lenses. For example, keratitis, corneal infection, dry eyes or corneal ulcers are managed by what are known as bandage contact lens which prevent constant eyelid blinking and irritation.

Contact lenses are also classified according to the material used in their construction, wear time, disposability, shape and the number of focal points. While at this, a mention of cosmetic contact lenses is highly relevant. These contact lenses are designed just to enhance the appearance of the wearer by color and design patterns. Constant wearing of such contact lenses may bring in a bit of blurring of vision or obstruction of permanent nature potentially. It is perhaps for this reason FDA prefers to call such contact lenses as decorative lenses.

Contact lens need to be duly cared for. Always follow your doctor’s and manufacturer’s instruction. Use recommended solutions only and store them in ‘concave side up’ position.
