More often than not, forums are setup with the ideal if they provide a better service or offer more information then they will be successful. Sometimes this is the case, but most of the time without proper planning and dedication their forum will not grow past a handful of members.

Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. use complex algorithms to determing who gets to rank #1 for the searcher's query. The most important factors are the number and quality of site's linking to you, the anchor text of those links, the content on the pages getting linked to, and the crawlability of your forum.

It's important to make sure you have a good linking structure and don't show session ID's to guests. Build as many backlinks from free directories, article submission sites, friend's sites, and your competitor's as possible. Finally, make sure you have compelling and original information on your forum so that you'll have people naturally linking to you and so that you offer answers that search engines will refer to.

Ultimately, linking power is king. Building backlinks yourself (directories, article sites, paid links, etc.) will help to give you a boost in the search engine placement results (serps), but to maintain placement and continue to grow you will have to write compelling copy so that you'll earn natural links.

By increasing your link popularity and ultimately your search engine rankings, you'll gain exposure to new visitors that may be interested in joining - and contributing - to your forum. As your forum member base grows you'll have more content that people may find you through.

It's an evergrowing cycle, as you get bigger you'll grow faster. Unfortunately, many forums never get off the ground. Follow these suggested steps and you'll be sure to give your forum a fighting chance. There's obviously more to having a popular forum than what's listed here, however this will help lay the ground work for a successful community.
