Here are some ways to manage panic attacks. The first thing to realize when planning to manage panic attacks is to always keep in mind that no matter how uncomfortable they might make you feel, there is no danger involved with panic attacks. The impression of actual physical discomfort is there but unlike other conditions where those impressions are literally true, during panic attacks you are mostly feeling what your minds simulate. To manage panic attacks you must learn to manage your body and mind because in the end panic attacks are nothing more than normal bodily reactions and hence not dangerous. There is no danger of losing self-control or dying because of panic attacks.

Panic attacks are always for a very short duration even though you will continue to feel their after effects. Their actual duration is very short. To manage panic attacks you must train yourself to focus elsewhere, in other words distract yourself away from what you are temporarily going through and think of other things. Speak to someone, holding someone is even better, if there is no one around then just speak to yourself by describing your surroundings, the weather, and other things but make certain that your thoughts and words are pleasant and in a positive vein. If nothing else comes to mind then just engage your mind with puzzles that are easy to solve, even solving a jigsaw puzzle will be a good distraction.

Distraction is so good to help you manage panic attacks that even the most severe of attacks can be easily overcome. The key is that you do not fight or try to resist the panic attack but accept it as something natural, very temporary, and rooted in psychology rather than your physical body. If you have suffered them before then it is even easier to manage panic attacks. You already have the knowledge that whatever you feared previously never came to pass and that you were worrying yourself with imaginary fears. Fear heightens anxiety and realizing that the fear is not real is a good start to manage panic attacks.

Helping others manage panic attacks puts you in a slightly different role. You have to make yourself a good and sympathetic listener to the other person. This is no time to be critical of what is said and you must try and keep the conversation positive. Hold your advice for later on, when the attack and its after effects are over. Suggestions to make changes to the lifestyle of the patient during or immediately after a panic attack are not very constructive.

During calm times offer suggestions to explore relaxation techniques and avoiding stress. It is very imprudent to suggest alcohol or other stimulants to feel better. Taking downers will only worsen the situation. Above all else, remember that there are limits to how much you can help and how far you can go to offer solace. Beyond a certain point, it is not possible to manage panic attacks through sheer moral support and it becomes essential to seek medical attention. Do not let things proceed to that stage either with yourself or someone else.
