Cabinets are a significant aspect of any kitchen. Quality cabinets contribute to an increase in the value of a home, while also serving to be extremely efficient in the kitchen. However, poorly constructed cabinets can lower the value of a home and make the appearance of your kitchen poor as well. In order to know what the best cabinets for your house are, you must first learn the different types of cabinets, as well as what to do if the cabinets in your kitchen are less than perfect.

With cabinets, you have lots to choose from! There are several different types of cabinets that are made out of many different types of materials. Wood happens to be the most popular material. Types of wood cabinets to choose from include cherry, hickory, poplar, birch, maple, mahogany, walnut, ebony, oak and pine. Some are more expensive then others. On the low end, you will find poplar and birch. Oak and pine are a step up from these types. More expensive, quality wood includes maple, cherry and hickory. Mahogany, walnut and ebony are even more spectacular.

Once you have decided on the material of your cabinets, you must choose the type of cabinetry you want. There are cabinets to suit everyone’s style and price range. The three main categories of cabinetry include stock, semi-custom and custom cabinets. Stock cabinetry is the most affordable type of cabinetry. The downfall with stock cabinets is that you won't have a lot to choose from as far as design is concerned. Semi-custom cabinetry is the next step up and offers you more chances to customize. Like stock, semi-custom cabinets are factory made, but you are given more choices in the size, material and finish. Custom cabinets are the most expensive option because they are crafted especially for you! Keep in mind, custom cabinetry takes longer to build.

If your current cabinets are less than satisfactory then you have a few options. Basically there are two choices available to you; your existing cabinets can be removed and replaced or you can simply refinish your cabinets. Keep in mind, refacing your cabinets is really only an option if your current cabinets are still structurally sound. Also, if you feel that you need more storage space then it may not make sense to keep your current layout. However, if your existing cabinets are made from a quality wood and provide you with sufficient storage, then refinishing, also known as refacing, might be the way to go.

Overall, regardless of what type of kitchen you have, quality cabinetry is key. Not only can the right cabinets add to the appearance of the kitchen, but they also provide you with the storage space needed for your kitchen. Also, prospective buyers examine the kitchen cabinets when it comes time to sell your house so it’s best to have something good to show for them. Knowing that be sure to take the time to carefully look at your existing cabinetry and decide whether they compliment the appearance of your kitchen, whether they provide enough storage space and whether they are structural sound. If they fall short of one or more of these things then rest assured because there are many options available to you. Regardless of whether you do the work yourself or hire a qualified contractor to do it for you, you'll find that the end result is undeniably worth the time and money.
