Terni, Italy

Terni, Italy is an ancient picturesque city that can be found between the rivers Nera and Serra. Here you will find the birthplace of Emperor Marcus Claudius Tacitus at Internamna Nahartium among many other unique settings.

Terni is a mix of ancient times and modern mainly due to the fact that during World War II, Terni was hit heavy and many of the ancient buildings from its rich history was completely destroyed.

You will love the rich historical buildings that have been preserved in the old town center which include the Church of St. Francis from the 12th century, St. Alo a quaint and romantic church, Church of St. Salvatore, Church of St. Peter, and the Cathedral. Each one of these unique and exquisite buildings has a story to tell that can be seen through the frescoes, structure, design, and of course the ancient atmosphere that is present in the air.

Wandering through the ruins of the Roman Amphitheater and visiting many of the unique sights around Terni will have you walking in the footsteps of an ancient culture that once ruled the entire Umbria area. Medieval walls, towers and palaces welcome you as you stroll along the road with awesome beauty that will remain with you as you return home.

There are many wonderful attractions that guests love when they visit Terni which include Piazza Tacito with its memorable Fountain, Palazzo Spada, Largo Villa Gloir, which was the design of Ridolfi, Corso del Popolo, and the Obelisque “Lancia di Luce” which was created by Arnaldo Pomodoro.

As the legends goes, the remains of the saints is guarded by the Basilica of St. Valentine which is a main attraction that must not be left off your places to visit while in Terni.

Terni is a quiet and peaceful town where you will be able to enjoy history of ancient times unlike other areas of Italy. The quiet serene location of Terni between the rivers is one that must be enjoyed leisurely and not rushed.

In the vicinity there is the city of Narni, the roman Narnia, that gave name to the famous Narnia serie, recently on movies.

Narni, province of Terni, in the region of Umbria. Built on a hill 240 metres a. s. l., 20,570 inhabitants, is the geographic middle of Italy.

The town has outstanding views over the River Nera valley and offers artisitic and archaelogical itineraries, plus an abundance of natural history for the tourist.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION:
The first historical document, mentioning the town, is dated 600 BC, whenthe town was called Nequinum. In 299 BC, Narni was a Roman colony under the name of Narnia In 233 BC, with the construction of the Via Flaminia, Narni became of major importance in 90 BC, Narnia became a municipality.

The first Christian Bishop of Narni, Giovenale from Carthage, was chosen in 368 AD and later was consecrated as Saint Patron of the town. In the 11th century it established its power as a free "Comune" (autonomous town). Between the 12th and the 14th century it reached its greatest period of splendour and developed a school of painting and goldsmiths.

Many artists of the Renaissance period produced works for clients and patrons in Narni: Rossellino, Ghirlandaio, Gozzoli, Vecchietta, Antoniazzo Romano and Spagna. In 1527, the Lanzichenecchi destroyed Narni almost completely. Slowly the walls, buildings and churches were re-built and by the end of the century, Narni had been re-established.

Many famous people have been born in Narni, including the emperor Cocceio Nerva, Gattamelata, the Beata Lucia, Berardo Eroli, Galeotto Marzio and S.Cassio.
