Whether you’re moving across town or across the country, you’ll want to find a local Boston moving company. A local company can work with you more efficiently to get your belongings packed and ready to go and you will have a local office you can call if there are any problems or if questions arise.

Finding the right Boston movers can be tricky. The phone book will reveal dozens of them. Not all are reliable; how do you find one that will treat your belongings with respect and deliver your furnishings on time? Doing your homework is a good start. Here are some things to consider:

1.Boston moving companies should be licensed, bonded and insured. Be sure to ask to see proof of this when interviewing a potential moving company. Also ask if each of their employees is bonded individually, and whether they ever use fill-in help. If a company is overbooked, it could send untrained, temporary help to your home. Be sure they understand this won’t be acceptable.

2.Check out Boston movers with the Better Business Bureau and find out if they are members of the American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA). Companies belonging to the AMSA can use the organization’s dispute resolution process if there are questions about damage or delivery issues.

3.Get three estimates, preferably by having a professional come to your home. If it’s a Boston moving company, they should have no problem sending an estimator out to walk through your home in order to give a more accurate bid. Go over details like how much clothing you have and whether the company will be packing it, what is in the attic and basement and how many fragile items will have to be packed. Ask them to figure in the date of the move, the distance being traveled and the anticipated packing time. Boston movers in general can’t give you a guaranteed price, but many will guarantee they will be within a certain range if they do an actual walk-through with you.

4.Get everything in writing, including all estimates. Be sure each Boston moving company you talk to has itemized everything. If you can’t make heads or tails of the estimate, be very wary. It’s much easier to pad an estimate or raise the bill after delivery if you can’t tell what each portion of the bill was actually for.

5.Compare apples to apples, not apples to oranges. Ask questions and be sure you know what is and isn’t covered; two similar prices may, in fact, provide very different levels of service and protection. Is the company covered for replacement value of your belongings if they are lost or damaged? Does the packing charge include the cost of paper and boxes, or is that a separate fee?

6.Always ask for verifiable references. A Boston moving company should have a list of satisfied customers you can contact as references. Generally, three is a good number of people to contact from that list. Ask them if they were satisfied, how problems (if any) were resolved, if the movers were professional and courteous, etc.

If you use these tips, you should be able to find a Boston moving company that will pack, protect and move your belongings as though they were their own. When you arrive at your new house, you’ll be able to move in with no unexpected surprises because your Boston movers did the job right.
