Have you ever heard of a belly button ring (or any piercing for that matter) making an escape attempt out of your body? I'm not talking about the jewelry coming undone either, I'm talking about the body rejecting it and pushing it out through the skin! This phenomenon is known as migration (or more commonly - rejection).

If you were to imagine for a moment - earrings that are very thin and very heavy, slowly 'dragging' downwards and out of the ear. That could happen if the guage size on your belly button ring is the wrong size too. It's a good thing to be aware of.

There are other things that might cause a belly button ring migration though. The body might not 'bond' with the metal that has been used in the jewelry. This is highly uncommon these days because the belly button ring metals that are used are hospital/surgical grade implant metals. That's right, the kind of metals used for surgery!

Tissue damage could also cause belly button ring migration, along with incorrect placement of the belly button ring (ie the piercing is too close to the surface). Rubbing or friction could also have an effect on a migrating belly button ring.

A migrating belly button ring may not migrate all the way out. It may just move a little bit and then stop.

The best thing to do though if you do notice your belly button ring migrating, is go and see your reputable piercing salon. They should know what they are doing, and be able to advise you of the best course of action. They do this stuff all the time! It may just mean you need to remove the ring until it's healed, and the re-pierce, or take the belly button ring out altogether (worst case scenario).
