Probably one of the biggest mistakes a writer can make is to try to write for everyone. As writers our goal is to reach people with our words, perhaps help them or inspire new ideas. However, we can not reach everybody, at least not with one piece of writing. If you are attempting to reach anything with a pulse then put down your pen and remove your fingers from the keyboard because you are wasting your time. One of the first things you should consider when you begin the writing process is your target audience. Not knowing who you are writing to can cause confusion for your reader and make writing more stressful then it should be.

Every topic has an audience, when writing you need to take into consideration your reader’s familiarity with the facts, opinions, and arguments related to the topic. An academic piece usually addresses an audience familiar with the subject while a review article may discuss a product or performance that your readers are not familiar with therefore they can not be approached in the same way. You should also take into consideration your readers beliefs and values because they will affect their response. Do not assume that your readers share the same beliefs and values as you do.

It is human nature to want to please. And as writers we feel an even stronger need to get the attention of every living soul. Thus some authors cram everything they can into an article so they can appeal to the masses. What they end up with is a confusing mixture of diction and grammar. It’s not that what the author has written is not intelligent, well thought out and grammatically correct, it’s that they tried to accommodate everyone and forgot to cater to the real beneficiaries of the article.

You wind up with a flea market for readers and if you’ve ever been to a flea market or an “all in one store” you’ll know that they are hard to maneuver through even if they have what you need. Confusing the reader is the last thing you want to do, because they’ll end up leaving. Is this what you want after you spent all that time thinking up those wonderful sentences?

You may think you are maximizing your exposure by writing for everyone but you’re not. I’m guilty of it too when I first started writing I failed to take into consideration who I was writing for and it hurt my writing. Not only that but it makes writing more stressful then it needs to be. You suddenly have to consider everyone which results in the author adding snippets here and there to attract a large audience. The trouble with is that you never really elaborate on what your article is actually about so the reader does not receive enough information. These types of articles also tend to be long drawn because they are stuffed with so much information and yet not enough to satisfy the reader.

The next time you sit down to write consider who you writing for. Think about what they may already know as well as their beliefs and values. You’ll find that you will have a more effective piece when you stop trying to write for everyone and start writing for your target audience.
