Finding the right dog as a pet can be a tricky choice to make. You not only have to pick the most appropriate dog but you have a responsibility for it for it’s whole life. Your dog will make a major bearing on your life. Choose the right dog breed and it will enrich your life. Choose the wrong breed and you and your pet could be very unhappy indeed.

Sadly, most people thinking about having a dog and which breed to go for make size or looks their number one priority, yet, however there is a lot more in finding the right dog breed for you and your family than thatat fist glace. Picking a dog whose natural manner and requirements are compatible with your lifestyle is your first stop.

The way to start in attaining success is to choose the best breed category. This way you will be considering breeds of dogs whose natural characteristics make them successful for you.

Fortunately for you, kennel clubs all over the world have a way for assigning all dog breeds in broad categories by the type of job they were bred for. A great place to start is your national Kennel Club. The ones to look at are: American Kennel Club, Canadian Kennel Club and UK Kennel Club.

Typically, the main breed categories are as follows (though kennel clubs use different titles:

Hounds
Toy DogsHunting Dogs (Gundogs)
Terriers
Utility Dogs
Working Dogs

Lets look at each of these categories in more detail.

Hounds were bred for their sharp sense of smell and sight. Again they were emplyed (and still are) for hunting. Dog breeds in this segment do make teriffic pets but require a lot of exercise if you are to keep them happy in your home. Well known examples are: Daschunds, Basset Hounds, Irish Wolfhounds, Deerhounds, Beagles, Whippets and Greyhounds. You may have noticed there great variation in size of dog in this category.

Utility dogs are a family of many many diverse kinds of breeds placed into the same catagory because of their non-sporting beginnings. Generally they they were bred for a distinct purpose, however, these skills are widely varied. In this category will find dogs such as: Dalmations, English Bulldogs, American Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Shih Tzus and Poodles. The breedshere in this category are usually among the oldest breeds of dog recorded.

Originally, terriers were bred to hunt unwanted rodents like mice. They are mostly small to medium dogs, as they needed to be lower to the earth to take the rodents and such quary that they pursued. These dogs are often brave, and highly resolute. They are quite ancient forms of breeds, as far – if not further – than the Middle Ages. Terriers today are seen as attractive dogs, but are better suited to experienced masters due to their more stubborn personality. Examples of terriers are: Miniature Schnauzer, Jack Russell, West Highland White, Boston, Welsh, Wire Fox, Staffordshire, Cairn, Scottish, and Border.

Working dog breeds were bred for guarding, searching, and rescuing. They often had individual tasks for which they were very trained highly. They like to be worked and if you spend the time to invest with them are very gratifying breeds to own. Typicle breeds in this section include: Great Danes, Collies, Rottweillers, Mastiffs, Corgis, German Shepherds, Dobermanns, Old English Sheepdogs, Newfoundlands and Boxers.

Toy dogs are the tiny friends and lap dogs of the dog catagories. Though each dog was used for a particular reason, they are placed in this group for their tiny stature. Overall, toy dogs are quite amicable and faithful, and require lots of loving. They are also intelligent and are easily spoiled as their owners can be poor on discipline due to their small stature. Look out for: Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, Papillions, Chihuahuas, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Pekingese.

Hunting dogs are the types of breeds which used to be bred to be easily trained in the area of searching for and recovering game that has been shot. The hunting dog category can be broken down into a number of sub-categories: Setters, Retrievers, Hunt/Point/Retrieve, and Spaniels. These breeds are loyal and pleasant animals with a great all-around temperament for a pet, however, often they require lots of looking after and exercise.

That completes our brief article on choosing your dog using dog breed groups. Please take care in choosing the right group for your family. You should now be more educated to take that decision.
