So, you've given the idea of freelancing a little more thought. You like the idea of working from home and doing something you enjoy doing. I know that I love the freedom and flexibility of working at home - and you have decided that you are tired of toiling for long hours and relatively few rewards. It's time to start your own freelance business, working from home.

I have little doubt that you have put a great deal of thought into embarking on a freelance career as your work at home opportunity. You have probably taken a successful professional and turned it into something you can do from home - or maybe you decided that it was time to get rid of that dead end job and move on to something more personally rewarding. Whatever the case, you are probably eager to get started.

But, before you get too excited and jump head first into shallow water you might want to go through this checklist of things you should do before you make the jump to full time freelance work from home:

" Integrate yourself - At first, you might want to just start out doing a little moonlighting on the side. Take a freelance job here and a freelance job there in order to build yourself a reliable and steady stream of work. One of the biggest mistakes made by first time freelancers is they believe they can sustain their income immediately. This is far from the truth. Gradually making the switch from full time work for someone else into freelancing and building a steady clientele is the best way to go.

" Set aside some savings - This is a good idea regardless of your work at home venture. If you have some money you can fall back on, you won't feel so much pressure to take work that you don't really want. The best plan is to have at least 3 to 6 months of your former income in the bank so you can weather the storm of slow months if need be.

" Let people know in advance - If you are planning on freelancing, let people know well in advance that this is what you are going to do. Keep people informed of the work you have been doing and keep poking them for possible work. Talk to some of your old work contacts and keep the word out that you are freelancing and working from home!

" Get business cards - No matter what you are doing, if you are looking for more clients, you need to have a 'calling card' so people can get a hold of you today, tomorrow and into the future. Most of the clients you work with will probably call you weeks or months down the road. Make sure that when they are looking for someone in your field, that it is easy to access your name and contact information.

" Reinforce the communication - Keep talking to contacts about doing work for them in the future. In order to get clients to remember your name, you need to make sure you keep reinforcing it with them. Send close contacts a quick e-mail to let them know what you have been up to lately and that you would love to tackle some work of theirs. Name recognition is important if you want to generate work leads in the future!

OK, so that's just scratching the surface of tips for setting out into the freelance world. The bottom line when you are considering work from home opportunities like this is to be prepared. The better prepared you are to work from home full time, the more lucrative it will be, and the more flexible and free your schedule will be.
