Herbs are in existence for a long time and have served a variety of purposes. People have used them to cure illness and spice up different dishes; some people even believed them to possess magical powers. Do you dream to possess a herb garden of your own? Well- we present some ideas for you to set up your own herb garden.

Initial Planning

At first, select the herbs that you desire to grow. Also decide the types that you would prefer - perennials, biennials or annuals?

You also have to plan for the space that your plants will occupy in the garden. If you wish, you can have such specific information by purchasing books tailor made for the purpose.

Initially, chalk out a plan on paper for your garden. You should maintain proper distance between the annuals and the perennials so that when the annuals are pulled out, the perennials aren’t disturbed. You can plant perennials on your garden-edge. This way when you till the garden, there won’t be any risk of digging them up.

Another important fact to keep in mind is to plant the shorter ones towards the front side and the taller ones at the back. Also, keep adequate space between successive rows of plants so that they can grow properly. It would be very helpful if your plants are planted in the proper positions.

Lay-out plan

You can have a square herb bed. You can also divide your square bed into four segments by two paths of 3 feet that cross at the middle. You can use brick or stone for bordering such a garden. You may also use a wooden ladder. You can plant the herbs between the rungs of the wooden ladder that you lay on the garden. You may also try wagon wheel bed where the process of planting is very similar to that of wooden ladders. You just have to plant the herbs between the wedges of the wagon wheel.

Growing your plants

Though different varieties of plants have varying needs, majority of them need alkaline soil. So, you should select the herbs that you wish to plant while you are in the initial stage of planning. This will help you to chalk out the routine your plants will need. In case your herbs germinate from seeds, strictly follow the instructions on the packet regarding watering, soil and temperature.

To grow herbs is one of the easiest jobs. You simply have to make the necessary arrangements regarding sunlight, effective drainage, fertile soil, adequate moisture and humidity. Even if you just meet these requirements at the minimal level, you will be assured of a healthy harvest.
