Walking is wonderful exercise and it is gaining wide popularity since it is a low impact exercise yet produces good results in a short amount of time. It is daily exercise that even those with varying physical conditions can participate in. Getting the most from walking requires a good walking shoe. The appropriate shoe will guard against conditions such as shin splints, blisters, and swollen feet and ankles, whether you are a beginner walker or have been walking for years.

How should one select a good walking shoe that will maximize their workout? When you go to the store take a few things into consideration as you make your selections. For starters, don’t assume that your feet have been or always will be the exact same size. As women get older their do adjust to different stimuli, and it is possible that your feet have gained over time perhaps up to a half a size or have increased in width. This is normal especially for women in their thirties and forties.

When buying your walking shoes, try to schedule it so that you are shopping at the end of the day. Your feet will have had time to do their normal swelling which can make a considerable difference in the way a shoe fits to the foot. Again, minor swelling in the feet is normal for women and it is likely to affect shoe size.

Wear the same socks that you do when you are walking. This will help to adjust fit as well as the other tips and create a better fit. A walking shoe that is too snug will cause pinching and blistering and ruin the workout.

When trying on the selection of shoes you are considering, make sure there is ample toe room. You should be able to wiggle your toes freely and measure approximately a finger wide space between the ends of your toes to the end of your shoe. Remember that not only does foot swelling occur when walking, but so does foot sweating. A shoe that is too tight won’t allow for the foot to breathe and lead to athlete’s foot, not to mention walking discomfort.

When trying on walking shoes, don’t just skip them on. Tie both shoes and walk around in them, as much as you can. Walk from one end of the store and back several times taking notice of any skipping, pinching, or cramping. These are signs that the shoe is too small.
