"When you meet someone for the first time, or walk into a house you are thinking of buying, or read the first few sentences of a book, your mind takes about two seconds to jump to a series of conclusions...I think those instant conclusions that we reach are really powerful and really important and, occasionally, really good." - Malcolm Gladwell

Whether the conclusions are good or not, those instant first impressions are how we judge - and it's also how others judge us. Knowing that, how much work should you put in to your online profile or personal webpage?

Folks write to me each day, some who have personal profile pages at Network Marketing Central (nearly 400 strong now), asking:

"People come to my profile (or webpage or blog) and then I never hear from them again. What's wrong?"

Network Marketing Sense Tip #4: Use only words a 13-year old can understand. No jargon.

1. Review the language on your profile (web) page.

2. Delete any techno-babble (e.g. glyconutrients, tryglycerides, parabens, cell-to-cell communication, etc.) because they are just speed bumps for someone skimming through - remember you only get 3-5 seconds. Big words don't impress anyone - they come across as arrogant and distant.

3. Replace jargon you want to use with simple words, e.g. tryglycerides = fat (or fat cell); parabens = preservatives. Stop using words that only others already in your company understand, like glyconutrients, or phrases that mean nothing to anyone except people in your company, like cell-to-cell communication.

4. Your web page has one first purpose: to engage someone who might have a problem like you did. And for which they seek a fix too. Words people don't understand don't engage. Think speed bump.

5. Tell your simple story, e.g. "I market a product for someone with achy knees like I used to have, and who didn't want to do drugs or surgery." Makes it easier for someone like you to see and recognize themselves. Also easier for someone who KNOWS someone like you, to refer you.

Some examples of engaging, no-jargon profile pages below. (I picked a quick five - some shorter some longer - you'll get the idea. And yes, you must register (no cost) to see.)

Meet them and see what they market and why.
