Ping are able to go where many other manufacturers cannot because of their incredibly sophisticated manufacturing capability.

That enables the designers to work with exceptionally thin and variable thickness walls and with innovative lighter materials.

In the Ping G5 Driver, you get a golf club that has as much of the weight as possible placed as low and deep as possible to create a lower Centre of Gravity position.

In a very traditional appearance you get all the benefits of improved launch angle, lower spin rate, higher MOI and therefore more distance, more often.

A variable thickness face, robotic plasma welding, stress-related web crown design and improved face geometry combined in the Ping G5.

Ping, the first manufacturer to fit golf clubs for the Professionals understand the implication of these innovations and have adjusted the lofts accordingly.

After the last years of “distance, distance & more distance” it is about time that one of the manufacturers placed a much bigger focus on accuracy and that is what Callaway have done with the new FTi Driver.

The aim was to enable you to have straighter tee shots more often and the key to that is stability (both horizontal and vertical), irrespective of where on the face you make contact with the ball.

Hence the radical design, where as much weight as possible is moved away from the Centre of Gravity to the extreme corners, increasing both stability and the MOI. If you are further interested in the technology then note that even the body is a made of a Carbon Composite, lighter than Titanium, to create more discretionary weight.

It will be an interesting year to see the popularity of the new square drivers and although the reports and test are positive the acid test is to come, the price tag is not a factor if the club does what the manufactures say. The Tour Professionals have not yet seemed to embrace the square drivers however will the amateurs.
