THE GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT, or better known as the digestive system, is one of the most important processes in the entire body. It's responsible for the consumption and absorption of nutrients for energy, and all around health. If your body cannot absorb these nutrients correctly, your entire body will probably not function in peak condition.

It starts at the mouth and ends with the, well, toilet, but if the GI Tract is working improperly, serious health conditions can arise. Anything from dehydration to colon cancer can become a risk of an unhealthy digestive system. It also has a lot to do with weight management.

The health risks can range from ulcers to diarrhea. The majority of these problems have to do with a diet high in fats and low in fiber. Due to the ever increasing trend of low carbohydrate/high protein diets, fiber has decreased heavily in the majority of America’s eating habits. The results can be devastating digestive tract if it has no maintenance.

This ever-important form of maintenance comes through fiber: soluble and insoluble.

Soluble fiber can be found in things such as oatmeal, whole grain breads, citrus fruits, and beans. Viscous fiber (as it is also known) is characteristically slimy in texture, as seen in oatmeal or chewed breads. This type of fiber is great for decreasing heart disease, as well lowering cholesterol and the risk of diabetes.

Insoluble fiber is the grainy particles in such foods as whole-grains, wheat bran, vegetables, and brown rice. This type of fiber has many benefits in weight management, as well as the cleansing of the colon.

The larger, less digestible particles swell and press forward, dragging fecal matter toward the anus, thus cleaning any left over waste resting in the large intestine, and decreasing the chances of colon cancer. Insoluble fiber also promotes the feeling of fullness and providing less of a chance to overeat.

Incorporating more fiber into your diet may save your life.
