Quick, who’s Tila Nguyen? No doing an Internet search to get the answer! Give up? Maybe you know Tila Nguyen better by her stage name: Tila Tequila. Starting to sound familiar? It probably should. Tila Tequila may be the most well known person on MySpace -- well, besides Tom, that is. Tila Tequila has over 1.5 million MySpace friends, and her MySpace profile has been viewed over 50 million times. 50 million! Can you say exposure?

Tila Tequila has used her MySpace notoriety to launch a modeling / singing / acting / blogging career. Sounds like Tila is multi-talented; either that, or she spreads herself out because she doesn’t do any one thing especially well. Just kidding, Tila! The point is, Tila turned MySpace popularity into professional opportunity and along the way made some of her dreams come true. Can the same strategy work for you?

Well, it’s certainly not impossible. MySpace is a networking dream: you can literally make contact with millions of different people with the click of a button. But that same dynamic can also make MySpace a challenge. Which of those millions of MySpace users do you try to hook up with? Some of them? All of them? How do you filter out the weirdos and the jerks? Tila Tequila has 1.5 million MySpace friends. MySpace currently limits users to adding 500 new friends per day. At that rate, it would take you 3,000 days to match Tila’s friend total, or nearly ten years! Got some time to spare?

And then there’s the competition. Quite a few MySpace users are hot girls and guys who are looking to get noticed too, and they’ve got sexy pictures of themselves on their profiles to prove it. You didn’t think Tila was the only one who saw career potential on MySpace, did you?

So is this to say you shouldn’t use MySpace to try and generate publicity for yourself? No way! MySpace is definitely a way to get noticed, and people are still getting noticed on MySpace (Playboy featured a ‘Women of MySpace’ pictorial in their June 2006 issue). Why shouldn’t you get in on the opportunity, and the fun? Just be aware that creating a big presence on MySpace takes time, and effort. It won’t happen overnight, but if it does happen, the payoff can be enormous.

Who knows, maybe you can be the next MySpace most popular person.
