Nature has taken millions of years to create the dramatic and spectacular landscapes that this part of Utah is famous for. Without a doubt, the southern part of Utah is home to some of the country’s most instantly recognized and most unique landscapes - including Bryce Canyon, Zion and Grand Staircase National Parks.

The less crowded - but equally spectacular - north rim of the Grand Canyon is also just a short distance away. And a little bit further afield are the huge Navajo Indian reservation and the fantastic landscape of Monument Valley – instantly recognizable from dozens of western movies.

Apart from the spectacular scenery, several delightful small towns can be found in this part of Utah. St. George, Hurricane and Cedar City all make excellent bases for exploring the surrounding area – offering all the essential facilities for visitors, but with a charming small town feel.

Outdoor activities are plentiful in this part of Utah – partly due to the excellent year round climate, where even winter temperatures hover in the 50s. Apart from golf, hiking, fishing and camping, you can also participate in water sports of every kind – and of course, some of the country’s best skiing.

For the truly adventurous, there are several different ways to see Southern Utah’s scenery. Several companies offer tours of the area by jeep or ATV (all terrain vehicle) or for a truly different perspective on one of the most unique landscapes on earth – take to the skies in a hot air balloon flight.

People have been attracted to this part of Utah ever since Brigham Young and his followers discovered the area in the mid 19th century. During the last few years, this part of Utah – particularly Washington County – has also started to attract new residents and retirees, as well as tourists.

If you are planning to relocate - housing is plentiful and affordable here. The average home costs around $180,000 – and homes range from older single family homes and condominiums to new luxury developments. The housing market in Washington County and other counties in southern Utah has been described as “hot” and properties here tend to appreciate in value.

So spend some time in this part of Utah – Dixie, as the locals call it – and you will understand, as many others have done, why it has become one of the fastest growing areas of the United States.
