Having visited the Seychelles more than once I still am completely bowled over by the colour contrasts beweeen the tropical greens, the talcum powder sand, and the turquoises, blues, and pale greens of the sea, and Desroches Island Lodge did not disappoint.

The flight to Desroches Island Lodge takes about an hour from Mahe, and the approach to the island runway is so spectacular, with what seems like a never ending beach.

The lodge itself is tucked in at the side of the beach amid the coconut trees, and is small and beautiful.

My first good reason is that there isn't a telephone or television in my room, so I have at last escaped the 21st century.

I'm not suffering noise around thepool, or the background inane beat of a disco. I'm in my own tropical island paradise with deserted white sand, no not just white, but powder white, so white it hurts the eyes.

Very occasionally I hear a light aircraft landing bringing a few, very few others to join me in this tropical paradise, as there are only 20 suites, and very elegant they are too on Desroches.

The suites are in bungalows in the trees and scattered around the hotel, and the best way to describe them is creole style, decorated in sunny colours, and they are all close to the beach. Everyone has a king size bed, a bath with a shower, air conditioning, and fans. The terrace faces the sea, and of course there is the usual minibar, and room safe. They are very comfortable, welcoming and kind of tranquil.

The hotel has two restaurants, the main open air restaurant and the beach restaurant, and there is an open air bar, we loved the alfresco restaurant so you can sit barefoot, and wriggle your toes in the sand, although not quite so good if anything falls on the floor!! Much of the menu is based on what has been caught and fresh vegetables.

So what do you do when you are there, well I believe the diving is fantastic, but for us the snorkelling in the lagoon was more than good. You can walk and explore nature trails, or bicycle, play tennis, hit golf balls, or just be lazy and lie in a hammock, or on the beach, and read. The new spa is yet another exhausting option!! You can of course go fishing, but the major emphasis is on total relaxation.
