As a secret shopper, you may be asked to evaluate customer service, product availability, product pricing, product quality, store cleanliness, website operations or telephone customer service.

After evaluating the business, following the scenario provided to you by the mystery shopping company, you are then required to report your findings to the companies that contracted you so you can get paid. So where do you find these opportunities? Here’s how to do it:

Your first step should be to log onto the internet and start your search there. In mystery shopping, 99 percent of the available secret shopping opportunities are found online.

Set aside some time to search the Internet for mystery shopping companies that are accepting applications; or you can see a list of mystery shopping companies on our website. Legitimate companies don’t charge an application fee and most accept applications online.

Do some homework about mystery shopping. Check our website, the internet, libraries or bookstores for tips on how to find companies hiring mystery shoppers, and see our tips in our free report on how to do the job effectively.

The majority of secret shopping assignments are posted online on job boards or offered via email to the mystery shoppers who have signed up with those companies. In the posting, you are advised of the type of secret shopping assignment, as well as all the relevant details such as time frame for completion, general location, type of secret shopping required and the fee to be paid.

The Federal Trade Commission warns consumers to be skeptical of mystery shopping promoters who advertise for mystery shoppers in a newspaper’s ‘help wanted’ section or by email. While it may appear as if these companies are hiring mystery shoppers, it’s much more likely that they’re pitching unnecessary — and possibly bogus — secret shopping “services” as well as charge a fee for access to mystery shopping opportunities. They make their money by selling directories of companies that they provide to mystery shoppers, information which is readily available for free online.

Some of these companies also sell “certification.” Secret Shopping companies that use secret shoppers generally do not require certification. It is up to the individual secret shopper to decide if they want to be certified or not.

Also, be aware that those advertising companies who guarantee a job as a secret shopper are misleading customers, since secret shopping assignments are offered by the mystery shopping company and it all depends on their requirements for the job.

If you think you have encountered a secret shopping scam, you can seek assistance through your local consumer protection agency, the Better Business Bureau, your State Attorney General, or the Federal Trade Commission.

Secret shopping can be fun, and rewarding. It’s a great opportunity for you to patronize stores and restaurants you would normally not visit, and best of all, you get paid to shop there!

Have fun, get paid to shop!
