The digital age has arrived. Old technology is getting the boot more quickly than some of us are prepared to accept. It may be time to start converting that old technology into the newest forms. Certainly some things can be overlooked, like the video cassette of Milli Vanilli you purchased years ago. Other media must be preserved, for memory’s sake. It won’t last forever, and the equipment to play it is now obsolete thus not manufactured any longer.

Inevitably new technology will outlast old. As manufacturers learn to design products with better preservation, longer shelf life, and greater usage the less pliable stuff gets put in boxes and stuffed into corners. This is absolutely true with film; video film as well as still images.

Perhaps the major problem with these changes is that it’s often difficult, or near impossible, to transfer some types of old media into the new formats. At least doing it well can be a burden and an expense. Sometimes it’s worth the cost. Other times, as with the Milli Vanilli cassette tape, the past is best left where it rests.

Undeniably important media must be preserved before it deteriorates. Before the equipment to view it becomes old and useless. Before the memories of why that piece of information is important are lost forever. Take 8mm and Super 8mm film for example. Many families have preserved holiday gatherings, family trips, and lazy Sunday afternoons on film, with or without audio, of loved ones no longer with us. This is worth preserving.

Transferring media should be viewed as transferring memories. The added time and expense is nothing when looked at in this new light. While mothers and father may have passed on their children can share cherished moments in time with the youngest generations by preserving the moment. A memory is not frozen in time when it can be uploaded, shared, archived.

Before your memories are lost to deterioration, poor storage, or simply neglect consider transferring them into a digital format. With the technology available today you can add soundtracks, subtitles, post a story, and easily share these moments for decades to come. Computers and the internet are here to stay, 8mm film isn’t even produced any longer.

Your memories and those of your heritage are priceless. For generational as well as sociological and educational reasons preserving these images should be a priority for all who have them. So dust off that box of old film reels, research whether it’s best to do-it-yourself or pay an expert, and then commence sharing those memories you forgot you had. Though the times and even loved ones may be gone the memories should stand forever.
