You hear about it everyday on the television and radio. Advertisements tell you that you will be able to see again without ever wearing glasses or contact lenses again. Just go through the simple procedure known as lasik and you vision problems are forever gone. But what exactly is lasik and is it right for you?

This procedure was introduced in 1991 as is defined as

In situ-the cornea in its nature position on the eye
Keratomileusis-a process of carving the cornea to reshape it.

Make sense? It is an acronym for a much longer definition.

The procedure is one where the cornea-rather than being surgically removed, reshaped and then reattached-it is sculpted directly on the eye using the excimer laser as a sculpting tool. A very thin flap of the outer layer of the cornea is created using a state-of-the-art microkeratome.

This flap is like a hinged clear lid that is gently lifted back and the stroma beneath is exposed. The doctor will sculpts the stroma to correct its shape and the hinged clear flap is then placed back into position and is held in place by the eye’s nature suction. This provides a more comfortable process and a shorter recovery time.

Wow, this is really technical stuff with a lot of big words that you normally do not hear everyday. But, this procedure is becoming more and more popular with people who do not want to wear glasses or contact lenses. There is a high rate of success with this procedure and people are flocking to have it done.

If you think you want to have lasik performed on your eyes, you should check into the procedure. It is not for everyone and there are risks involved. You might want to read medical reports and listen to news reports to see learn about what is happening in this area.

Medicine is changing all the time and new medical procedures are being developed and approved by the FDA.
