Selling digital download products is a great and low cost business to have online, but in order to protect you’re investment, you should follow these simple steps to help prevent hackers from stealing you’re merchandise.

Hello fellow online seller. If you are like me, you have had you’re digital products stolen by online thieves at one point, or another. You may not even know that is being done until your product has been rendered almost worthless because it is now all over the internet.

This quick read may save you thousands of dollars that I have already lost to online pirates.

Website Owners Simple Steps

1.Setup an autoresponder service, or purchase an autoresponder script to install (or have installed) on your website. In many cases, your hosting account will have allotted you a certain amount of them that are already included in your hosting package. Check with your host. Emailing you;re download links is much more secure than placing them on a webpage.

2. Create a new download folder in your website root directory, located in level directly below your main domain:

Example: www. yourdomain.com/{root}/{next level down}/{and so on}.

The reason you want it in you’re root directory, is that thieves will often try to access the next level up from you’re download folder to see if they can access other folders on that same level, where as the root direct only has one level up.. you’re domain. There are no folders to open there.

For security purposes, you should name the folder with an obscure name like “AH7BVC’, I know, it seems weird, but trust me, these hackers are there and have programs to search out many possibilities to locate you’re precious products.

3. Before uploading your downloadable products to this new folder, you should also give them a difficult name so that hackers cannot locate them. Change in a file name would go something like this; Original Name “Webmasters Software Product”, rename to something like: “WSP6033D”. This file now becomes virtually unsearchable.

4.Extra protection for you’re downloads come in the way that you disguise your download link. Hackers also search for those. I recommend using a free service like tinyurl.com to give you a more obscure download link. It’s not foolproof, but it is just creates added steps for hackers to gain access to your products.

May all of your digital products go to paying customers.
