Even though you may be married, it’s important to maintain the spark that was once there during your courtship. In a marriage, we often tend to go on about our day and just know that our commitment is strong with the belief that our relationship no longer needs nurturing. In fact, the truth is quite the opposite. In many ways, a marriage takes even more work than a courtship because there’s a lot more at stake and a promise to be upheld.

Instead of spending a few minutes with your spouse here and there, why not make the relationship fun by actually dating your husband or wife. Sound strange? Maybe it does, but perhaps it’s just crazy enough to work. Think about how much more life your relationship would have if you were to enjoy little surprises here and there, such as a bouquet of roses and your handsome husband standing at the door in a tuxedo eager to dance the night away. Or, how would you feel if you came home on a Friday night and your wife handed you a cabin reservation for your favorite fishing spot on the lake or tickets to a sporting event that the two of you could enjoy together? These little surprises can make all the difference in a relationship and they may just be the ticket to a happier marriage.

If the aforementioned examples aren’t quite what you had in mind, don’t fret. You can still enjoy dating your spouse in a low key way that still keeps your love alive. How about a quiet date night at home with dinner and a movie? It’s casual, fun and gives the two of you some quality alone time that you can enjoy. If you have children, let them spend the night with grandma and grandpa. Afterall, what grandmother wouldn’t love to spoil her grandchildren with freshly baked cookies while grandpa tells them stories that they will remember for a lifetime?

Marriage is all about being in love, enjoying each other’s company and spending a lifetime together. It’s easy to forget that a relationship still requires effort after getting married, but it does. If you take the time to spend some quality moments with one another by having at least one ‘date night’ each week, you will avoid falling into the same rut that many couples face. Instead of just growing old together, try growing together and see if it doesn’t make a real difference.
