Excerpt from Part One: Develop an effective protection plan-Having a plan will reduce your chance of being surprised and off-guard are greatly reduced. ………………..

If you hear an alarming sound and you are alone, lock the door to the room you’re in and call 911. If the wrong doer as broken into your space, and you have an alarm system, a alarm signal has been emitted by the system and for the most part the wrong doer generally flees the scene to avoid capture and is you have the system monitored, a signal has simutaniusly sent to a police station, a protective service or the monitoring station and you should be receiving a call any minute and the necessary help is on the way.

If you don’t have an security alarm of some sort, when calling 911, state your full name, your complete address, and why you need help. Leave the phone off the hook so that, if necessary, the call can be traced. If there are children in the house, make the call to 911, and then gather the kids into the closest and safest room in the house, and secure it by jamming a chair or another heavy object the behind the door or under the knob as a stopper. (You’ve practiced this a hundred times, you’ve got it down pat.)

Install top-quality, high security cylinder locks on all exterior doors. A deadbolt with three inch screws for all exterior doors, including sliding doors. Lock the dead bolt when you’re inside.
Be sure your outside doors are made of metal or solid core (hardwood). Hollow core wooden doors are for interior only.

Reinforce all door frames. It would be foolish to install an expensive lock just to have your door frame splinter in-to bits and pieces with a well placed shoulder or kick.

Install highly sensitive “glass break” detectors. The sound of breaking glass might not be enough to alert you or your neighbor to a wrong doers attempt to break into a window, but an alarm going off would wake someone, and would put flight into a wrong doer.

If you have an alarm system that is monitored, a signal would have been send by the breaking glass detector to the control panel of your system which would sound an audible alarm sound, meant to let the wrong doer know that he has been detected and he better leave (also can be no alarm at the premises) and at the same time forward a signal to the monitoring station that there is distress abound and needs immediate attention.

Install a driveway alarm to let you know someone is coming up the driveway. The driveway is part of your perimeter. A security camera system can be set-up to give you a view of the front door and your driveway. Gets you in the attentive mode.

Keep the front entrance locked or dead-bolted at all times. Install some method of seeing the person on the outside of the door. Peep hole, monitored security camera, etc.

If you don’t know the person at the door, don’t open the door even if the person says they want to use the phone. Talk through the locked door. Make the call for them. Children should not open the door without direction from an adult. Whether walking, jogging, or riding a bicycle or in a car, be aware of who may be following you. If you have any bad feelings, head for safety, especially if you are in a secluded area, isolated parking areas or on the way into your apartment or house it’s better to be safe than sorry.. Again head for safety. Once on the inside safely, you can view the situation from safety or you can get or call for help.

The back yard should be fenced for the children’s safety. They can’t get to the streets and the streets can’t get to them.
