A diploma is a piece of paper which shows proof or certification that a person has finished or graduated from a degree offered by a government recognized educational institution. The details found in a diploma are printed on a letter size parchment paper, a translucent-type of paper usually off-white in color. On the paper, the information printed includes the name of the institution, the name of the graduate, the written pledge, date awarded, and signatures of the authorized school representatives usually the principal or dean.

Any studying students who are willingly eager to finish their school can acquire a diploma. Students from different levels like pre-school, elementary, secondary, tertiary, and graduate studies can have this diploma. As long as they are able to finish the required number of units and other essential requirements, they will be eligible for the awarding of this certification.

Acquiring a diploma takes time to be awarded to a student. It will take years before you can acquire the proof of your education. One has to enroll first to a level in which a person is eligible for enrolment. Then, he or she has to pass all the courses. Course rating does not really matter as long as he or she gets the minimum passing mark. When everything has been completed, the student will just wait for the scheduled graduation ceremonies. This event will award all the graduates the diploma and guarantee that they have completed the course.

Each level has different criteria on how a diploma can be issued to a student.

For Pre-school, the average students’ age range normally from 3-6 year old toddlers. If the parents think their child is capable of going to school, then they can enroll him or her. Usually, this takes 3 years to complete for a normal enrollee. A student has to finish pre-school level, kindergarten level and preparatory level. After the last level, a diploma will be awarded. This is usually a requirement when entering the elementary level.

For elementary level, the average students’ age range normally from 6-13 years old. Usually a pre-school diploma is a pre-requisite but not most of the time. As long as the student can pass the entrance exam, he or she is eligible as elementary student. Elementary level takes six or seven years to finish. For every level, almost the same subjects are taken for each level but the topics are getting more advanced. Some subjects are added from a lower to a higher level. When the person meets all requirements, he or she obtains an elementary diploma.

For secondary level, the average students’ age range normally from 12-17 years. This is commonly a four-year course, which offers a more advance knowledge than elementary level. A student must be a graduate from elementary level to be accepted in this level. More subjects are offered and classes almost occur the whole day. A graduate of this level will be granted with a high-school diploma.

For tertiary level, the average student’s age start from 16 years old and above. Any person with high-school diploma is eligible for a tertiary education. A student must choose which field he or she wants to pursue. Offered degrees may vary in duration depending on the number of units required. The entire curriculum may take 3-5 years to complete. A student who graduates from tertiary level will receive a diploma stating that he or she finishes the chosen field of study. Tertiary diploma serves as passport for employment or for the next level of studies.

For graduate studies, age does not matter as long as the student has a tertiary diploma. Students from this level take a master’s degree, doctorate degree or law. It usually takes another 2 years to complete a course. But for doctorate degree, the duration takes another 4 years or so depending on the specialty he or she is pursuing.

Diploma is important because it serves as pre-requisite from one level to another. It also becomes a passport to one’s chosen career in the future. Lastly, it guarantees a person that he has undergone years of training and education to become a better person of the society where he belongs.
