A dental implant in an artificial tooth root used by a specialty dentist called a peridontist. The implant is inserted into the jaw and holds a replacement tooth or bridge in place without using the neighboring teeth for support for the new one. They are used to save a tooth and hold it in the mouth for people who have lost either a tooth or teeth from injuries, disease, or a number of other reasons. Dental implants are also used to provide support for dentures, making them more secure in the mouth and more comfortable as well.

Dental implants are very durable, and when properly cared for they will last for a number of years. Implants can be treated like teeth and should be brushed, flossed, and treated to regular check-ups at the dentist.

Dental implants are generally placed in the mouth by a peridontist instead of a general practice dentist. Peridontists are dentists that specialize in the gum tissue and jaw bones, and since implants rely so heavily on these areas, dentists usually will refer patients to a peridontist for placing implants.

There are two main types of dental implants used today:

·Endosteal. Endosteal implants are he most commonly used implants and are inserted directly into the jawbone. Materials they can be made of include screws, cylinders, or blades. They hold the new tooth or teeth in placed and are more commonly used to those with bridges or removable dentures.

·Subperiosteal. These implants are placed on top of the jaw instead of actually in the bone, as with the endosteal implants, with the metal posts protruding through the gym to hold the fake tooth or teeth in place. These are most often reserved for people who can’t wear dentures or who have shorter bones in the jaw.

Who is a candidate for dental implants?

Dental implants are best reserved for those who, overall, are in good health and have good dental health. Dental implants require use of the jaw bone, so the gum line and jaw in general should be in good health and free of gum disease. If you are in need of implants and have other problems to be taken care of as well, your dentist will usually treat the other issues before referring you to a peridontist.

How are dental implants used?

One of the most common reasons people get implants is to keep dentures in place. Often, lower dentures will slide and make chewing or talking difficult. An implant is a durable solution for this and most people who opt for implants for this reason will see a significant improvement in their ability to chew and speak and feel more comfortable overall.

If you’ve lost one of your natural teeth and it’s still salvageable, your dentist will most likely refer you to a peridontist to have it reattached with an implant.

Most implants can be done with a local anesthetic and take just one surgery, depending on the situation. More serious cases may require two surgeries. Implants are, however, expensive, and can range anywhere from $1,000 all the way up to $25,000, depending on how many are needed.
