For quite some time I have been trying to get my son to understand Christianity ever since I was saved. Unfortunately, when I was younger and raising him I thought I was saved, but I really wasn’t. My examples probably weren’t the best and I didn’t understand the true meaning of being saved until after my son had moved out on his own.

We attended church in his childhood, and went through the motions not realizing that they were the most influential years back then. His careless lifestyle that he has today leaves me thinking that I’m not so sure that he’s on the right track. He became a father to my beautiful grandson this last year but let his job go and likes to party a bit too much.

It is a constant nagging feeling that I have, to just be assured he is saved or living the Christian life. I frequently talk to him about Christianity and how to be saved by accepting Jesus Christ as his Savior. Praying consistently for the Holy Spirit to help guide me to be a good example is a big help and I’ve noticed that the Holy Spirit can have a strong presence that instills a more heightened awareness of right and wrong decisions.

Just a few months ago, my son’s girlfriend called and said that he was leaving her. A few days later, my son's friend called looking for him and said that he had been hit by a car while riding his bike across a busy street at night. He had no helmet on and was thrown five feet in the air according to his friend who was riding ahead of him and said it sounded like a gun shot when he was hit. He thought he had to be dead until he got up and was taken to the hospital where he was diagnosed with just a possible cracked rib. His friend was amazed he was alive after the accident!

The reason I know that he is alive is because God was protecting him. When my son’s girlfriend had called the day before and said that he had wanted to break up their relationship. I immediately felt a strong worrisome feeling come over me. I then prayed for God to protect him and keep him safe. That is exactly what happened…a miracle! God is alive and prayer works! He and his girlfriend are also working things out now and hopefully marriage will be in the near future.

My son and I talked after this happened, and I explained to him that the there is a reason for everything that happens in our lives. I felt that this accident was a major warning and that he needs to pay attention. Sometimes when God allows bad things to happen to us, what he is really trying to do is to get our attention, to see things more clearly and hopefully learn from it.

At the same time it was a miracle because I really believe that I would have been attending his funeral if God hadn’t been protecting him. My son agrees that it was a warning from God too. I can only keep praying that he doesn’t forget this and that he will eventually live a more fulfilled Christian life.

So whether bad situations happen in our lives or miracles, I think that God places those things for us and it is up to us to pay attention, learn and never forget to thank God for all that he does and will keep on doing for all of us. His everlasting love is what he offers and what better or more powerful love do we need?
