Most Golfers will argue that putting is more mental than physical. However before you go out and consult your local physic, you should consider taking a look at your alignment. More often than not missed puts can be traced back to poor aiming.

There is a device that can easily be made at home to help you prefect your putting technique. Take two metal rods, that are each about a foot in length. Then find some string to tie to each end of the rods. The rods should be about 1/4 inch in diameter, and the string should be about 10 feet long.

Then take the rods to your local putting green and find a putt that is about 6 feet long, fairly straight, and level. Next you are going to want to stick the first rod about 6 to 8 inches behind the center of the hole. Then take the other rod on the line of the straight putt until there is tension in the string. because the string is tied to the top of the rod it should be about 10 inches off of the ground.

Take a golf ball and place it directly under the string so that when you are looking down on the ball it appears to be cut in half by the string. Then take your putter and put it behind the ball and take a stroke; if your putter goes straight back and straight through with the stroke, the string should be directly in the middle of the putter blade as it goes back and forth. If it doesn't, you will notice that the blade of the putter is not in line with the string. Practice putting until your putter stays in the same line as the string during your stroke. Due to the fact that you are able to see a straight line to the hole, you should be able to easily solve your alignment problems with this, handy, and easy to use homemade device.

Another important lesson that can be learned with this device, is the straight line that you are seeing going to the hole. The string will allow you to envision the path that the ball needs to take to get to the hole. You should try to maintain this mental image when you are out on the course. Putting requires a great deal of imagination, and if you are able to in vision the line when you are taking a putt, it will make it all that much easier to stroke the ball along the intended path to the hole. Over a period of time, you will start to notice that you will envision the line as you are standing over those 6-foot putts. Not only is this little device cheap, it is also a very effective way to learn how to putt.
