If you have heart or physical impairment, you will generally not have a problem securing a disability claim from American Social Security because your disease is in their list of recognized impairments. However, if you’re suffering from fibromyalgia, you need to win a fibromyalgia disability case before you can successfully claim disability allowance.

If you are interested in claiming a disability allowance, read on so that you will know what you need to do.

Learn the background of the disease

It is not enough that you know that fibromyalgia is a chronic disease that causes you pain and suffering, you also need to know more about it. What causes the disease? What are your options for medication? Is there a cure for fibromyalgia? Is it a permanent condition?

You need to know about the disease so that you will be able to make lifestyle changes that could help improve how you feel. You don’t want to be forever trapped in a condition that causes so much suffering and stops you from enjoying your life.

Join fibromyalgia forums or support groups

There are many organizations and forums about fibromyalgia you can visit and join. Participating in such groups can help with the isolation and depression that sometimes accompany fibromyalgia and it often helps to share experiences with people who are going through or have had the same issues.

Through these groups and organizations, your family and friends will also be able to interact with the family and friends of other people with fibromyalgia. Sometimes, it is very difficult to explain to a family member, your boss at work or friends about the condition. Some people might even think that you are making up the symptoms you’re experiencing.

Documentation is so important

One of the most important things you need to do if you’re planning to file a fibromyalgia disability case is to document your condition. If you have been experiencing soreness and aches all over your body for several years now, and your doctor seems to be perplexed by the symptoms, you still need to document them so that you have a record of what’s been happening; whether it’s been called fibromyalgia or not. Documenting the incidence, severity and length of each of the symptoms will also help your doctor come up with a diagnosis.

It would be helpful for your case if an expert diagnosed or agreed with the diagnosis of fibromyalgia. The American Chamber of Rheumatology compiled the fibromyalgia diagnosis criteria so getting a diagnosis from a rheumatologist could help your case.

Another key document you need to check is your medical record. You need to ascertain that your medical record will show that the symptoms you are experiencing is really making it hard for you to do everyday tasks, including performing your job.

In order for your medical record to be comprehensive, you need to provide your doctor a full list of all the symptoms you have felt since your last doctor's appointment. It would be advisable to include the activities that you are able to do and those that you cannot perform as a result of your symptoms.

If you file for a fibromyalgia disability claim, you need to prove that your condition is preventing you from doing normal daily tasks such as walking, standing, cooking or house work as well as you job. If fibromyalgia interferes with your ability to carry out these everyday tasks you stand a much better chance of winning a disability claim.
