In function, the panel to be joined is held with its face against the barrier and the edge for rest joint on the table of entry. The council is fed through the head of cutter and on an outfeed of the table. The knives in the head of cutter of rotation remove a quantity of material and the report/ratio of the two tables and barrier maintains the council directed in such a way that the result is an edge which is flat along its length and perpendicular to the face of the council.

A jointer can also be used to flatten the face of a council, in this case the single hearth is to produce a surface punt on the face of the council and the barrier is not used. This process is often carried out before the joining edge so that the council has a flat face of reference for following operations. To rectify a piece of structural timber bent, the guard is temporarily with the balanced variation. The machine is supplied and it structural timber is slowly lowered in the position in the sketch above, with the hollow side downwards. Some cuts are manufactured starting from red section “A”. The structural timber is end turned for the end and the same process is made with the section “B”.

This is repeated in the way prescribed with the operator taking an aiming on length the length of the structural timber from time to time to check the straightness of the structural timber. The operator should pay attention not to apply the pressure in the middle of work, and forces it in a false straightness. When the structural timber is almost right, the guard is replaced and the last cut is made in the normal way. The twisted material is treated in a similar way. The operator extends the structural timber on the bed of the machine and slowly rocks it on the side to the other to estimate the quantity of torsion. If it there with the word 20mm of torsion in the council, it holds the level of council and takes 10mm in addition to end, then repeats it for the other end.

Jointers are also used to make handing-over (also known under the name of grooves in North America) out of finished structural timber. The barrier is placed at the width of the handing-over and the table of entry is put at the depth. A jointer which is used for rebating has the ends external of him is blades also sharp and regulated with a small release with the head of cutter.
