It is widely thought that eating the wrong food can reduce your life span and lead to a multitude of health conditions. So, lets have a quick look at the reasons why a good diet is important for colon health and consider which colon cleanse diet may be the one that is suitable for you.

First, lets go over what the colon does and why it is such a critical organ.

The colon is probably the least understood organ in the human body. However it is one of the most crucial to our health.

Many health practitioners coin the phrase that “ death starts in the colon”, and although it sounds grim this statement is true for so many, and a telling reminder to the almost 50% of Americans who have digestive and bowel disorders and problems.

The colon is an organ that is about three inches wide and about six feet long. Its main functions are to remove water from material passed from the small intestines, absorbing nutrients in the process and storing and moving waste material along its length to be expelled.

A colon will naturally keep itself clean, as long as the diet has sufficient levels of water, fiber, fresh fruit and vegetables.

Difficulties arise when a diet is low in fiber and pure water and consists of high levels of processed, high fat and low fiber foods that basically glue” themselves to the colon walls.

Over time this fecal matter can become compacted, reducing the mobility of the colon making stools harder to pass and often causing constipation. It can also lead to lower levels of nutrients being absorbed and toxins from the waste material passing through the colon walls into the blood stream.

Another dangerous aspect of this situation is that an unhealthy environment in the colon can encourage parasitic infestations, bacterial infections and yeast infections, all of which can lead to further and more severe medical complications.

As you can see, keeping your colon cleansed is one of the more important things that you should do in improving overall health.

It is worth keeping in mind that prevention is better than cure. So, before waste accumulates inside your colon and becomes impacted, you should eat foods that are colon friendly.

The most important factor in maintaining the health of the colon is to increase the intake of fiber in the diet. Fiber is a natural laxative that encourages bowel movement. So, you should eat foods that are rich in fiber, such as vegetables, nuts, grains, beans, fruits and seeds.

There are two types of fiber, soluble and insoluble. They are both passed through the body without being digested, but they act differently. Both are required to support a healthy digestive system, and “scrub” the colon of waste material.

A high fiber diet is essential in keeping the colon clean and healthy. Fibers can help the colon by sweeping the debris that can accumulate inside it. Think of the fiber as a broom that can clean your digestive system.

Another method that you should integrate in your diet is drinking plenty of pure water. This is an effective way to cleanse your colon and it will decrease your body's toxicity levels and will also discourage constipation.

Although not a diet, it is important that regular exercise is taken. This helps with the mobility of the colon and can help “loosen” waste material in the colon and encourage regular bowel movements.
