A thicknesser is composed of three elements: a head of cutter which contains the punching tools; a whole of entry and outfeed the rollers which draw the council by the machine; and a table which is adjustable relative with the head of cutter to order the thickness resulting from the council. Some thicknessers portable differs slightly because the table is fixed and it is the whole of head of cutter/starting roller which is adjusted. The industrial thicknessers are able to accept the very broad councils and to remove great quantities of material in a simple passage. These machines are led by the powerful engines with induction and are of very heavy construction. Lately, a range of the light portable thicknessers became available which use the universal engines and are much cheaper than the industrial versions.

In function, the table is put at the desired size and the machine is supplied. The council is introduced into the machine until it does the contact with the roller of entry, which seizes the council and draws it in the machine and after the revolving head of cutter. The knives remove a quantity of material on the way through and outfeed of tractions of roller the council through and ejects them machine at the end of the passage. In order to carry out a council which is flat and uniform thickness over its length, it is necessary to start with a council which has at least a perfectly flat face of reference.

The council is fed with this face of reference flat on the table and the head of cutter removes a quantity of material of the opposite face so that it is made parallel with the face of reference. The face of reference is often created while initially passing the council above a jointer. A problem often met when to employ a thicknesser is shot. This appears like crosses deeper on a short section of the council at the end and is caused by the food or the incorrect deviation of alignment of the entry or outfeed of the tables.
