“No, dear John, no instant travel this time,” she said, “no need for that now. As they say, ‘when you can walk on water, take the boat.’ We’ll use regular airline tickets —normal methods you’re familiar with. By the way,you’ll love the hotel. Right on the beach. Lots of tropical fruit and drink, calypso music to your heart’s content.”

“It’s still going to cost a lot,” I said.

“Didn’t you hear me? I told you it’s all been arranged. One of Gideon’s friends made the weekend available. No cost — not for food, hotel, airline tickets or anything. As you know, we have connections.”

“Yes, but I still feel guilty accepting such an expensive gift. You see....”

Before I could say another word, Gideon piped in, “Why can’t you just accept a gift? Why do you always make it so difficult for others to do something for you? His voice carried a slight edge of annoyance as he continued. “If you act as if you don’t deserve the gifts of the universe, the universe won’t be able to give you anything. Receiving is just as important as giving. If you want to receive, you must learn to give. And if you give, you must learn to receive. One cannot exist without the other.”

“OK, Gideon, I get it. I’m just a bit overwhelmed at the idea of receiving such a wonderful gift — a great all- expense paid weekend. Thank you, thank you. See? I can get used to receiving very quickly.”

“It’s not always easy, John,” said Gideon. “I have to leave now; see you both in a few hours. I’ll let myself out.” He turned and walked clear through the closed door, just as if it hadn’t been there.

“How does he do that?” I murmured, more as an observation than expecting an answer.

“It’s easy when you know how; anything is easy when you know how,” Marla said.

“Yeah.. . sure .. . easy, figured you’d say that,” I mumbled.
