While concluding my ranting and raving session, I became embarrassed that Pandayji had been held witness to such an unenlightened outburst. “Well, there!” I said. “I feel better now, much better. It was marvelous marinating in self-pity. Now, watch this!” I picked up the pouch, took out the Ambrose Stone, walked to the open window and, in one final gesture of frustration and disgust, flung it far into the Arabian Sea. Then with tremendous composure I sat down again, looked at my three friends and smiled smugly. “Now what were you saying about finances, Gideon?”

“What finances? Did I say something about finances?” quipped Gideon. Then quickly with a broad grin he offered, “I know, I know. I’ll explain. I don’t want you throwing me into the water, too.”

“To the point and step by step this time, please.” I demanded in a commanding tone. “Mardai told me that you’d explain finances ... money.. .. Why has it been a problem for so long? I’m tired, very tired and more than a bit frustrated. I keep wondering how I’m going to take care of my family and pay all those bills. I’ll sit here for hours, if necessary, to hear what you have to say. So, say it. Go on, Gideon. Please, start right now. I’m listening.”

He was quiet for a few moments, composing himself as he finished the last bit of his dinner. Then he looked me straight in the eye while proclaiming, “Once you had quite some financial security; then you lost it all and had to start again from ground zero. You were able to start building back again, but have encountered some major ups and downs over the past few years. You ...”

Still very annoyed, I interrupted. “Don’t recount my financial history, Gideon. I’m all too familiar with it. Just tell me what the problem is, where the solution is and why it’s taken so damn long to rectify. Is that too much to ask?”
