Don’t know what it is about scheduling a cruise that compels some to pack as if they were joining a one year expedition to the North Pole. Yet most first time cruisers don’t lack for things to wear. They tend to pack twice what they need. Which demonstrates they really don’t understand what to wear on a cruise.

Obviously it helps if you know what to expect. And if you have been on a cruise ship previously you have a better idea of that than someone leaving the dock for the first time. In that case you know what to wear on a cruise. Or at least should know what is commonly worn.

Of course for some the best aspect of any kind of trip is the build up to your departure date. Looking forward to that and planning what to take and so forth is more than half the fun for them. And if that’s you I’m not out to put a damper on your enthusiasm. It is just that there is truth to the statement “They who pack best pack light”.

Then too, there are those who claim since you only have to unpack once, what’s a few too many things? Aside from the space they take up in your most likely less-than-spacious cabin, and an extra suitcase or two, probably not much. But why bother when you don’t have to?

So enough build up already. Let’s get to the point.

As already mentioned when packing for a cruise “Less Is More”.

Also you really don't need to bring stuff - just in case. If you're unsure whether or not you need something, don't take it. You can always pick up anything important in port. So another rule is "When in doubt leave it out" - of the suitcase.

Naturally what you’ll be wearing also depends on the cruise ship dress code. On most cruises what you’ll be expected to wear to dinner is laid out for you. Depending on the cruise it may be all formal. Or a mix of causal and formal wear. And casual can mean shorts are permitted - or not.

Jeans are usually not worn. Especially in the dining room. There you may find them to be taboo. You are better off with outfits you can mix and match. Men can achieve a different look with three shirts and a couple pair of Dockers. Women tend to work with blouses and skirts.

Finally where you’ll be cruising affects what to wear on a cruise. Those on a ship near Alaska won’t be dressed the same as someone on the Mediterranean. For the former a coat with a removable liner might be smart to bring. But that wouldn’t be good in Greece. There a light weight nylon windbreaker might come in handy however.

Hopefully this helps give you a better idea of what to wear on a cruise.
