Looking at her I saw there wasn’t even a remote trace of amusement on her face. I composed myself while replying, “It’s downright funny, Marla. To think that I believed anyone could know the greatest secret. How could I ever have believed such a thing? Well, you’re both great. You certainly did put one over on me. I should have known there was no such thing.”

Gideon and Marla looked at each other as if to say that this conversation was getting nowhere. I obviously didn’t think they were serious. Yet, they had never given me false information before. They were always truthful, though there were times when they did not choose to explain everything. I was a bit more serious now.“Gideon,” I said, “you are joking, aren’t you?”

“No, I’m not joking,” he said.

“So, this is the tremendous, big secret?” I mused.

“I imagine, John, that it would have had more of an awesome effect on you if ten thousand angels,complete with blaring trumpets, descended in a blinding, brilliant flash of light to present it to you. And better still,if these envoys disguised it in a thousand mysterious puzzles or enigmatic phrases, it would be easier for you to accept than the simple, honest way I presented it to you. To discover truth, most people want to believe that mysterious quests must be made through obscure mazes only to discover complex messages disguised in a multiplicity of meanings. They feel that they must search for hidden scriptures or lost tablets, magic crystals or the Ambrose Stone. Why is it, John, that people will believe the most absurd ideas when those ideas are made to seem complex beyond comprehension. Yet, they will ignore the most profound ideas presented with simplicity andclarity? ”Gideon shook his head, as if puzzled.

“It must be, Gideon, that some things just seem too simple to be true. This secret you just told me seems like simplicity itself .. . too easy. It’s as if, well, don’t get me wrong, but it really seems as if anyone could do it .. . develop a close personal relationship with the Almighty — Ha! What’s so special about that? Don’t we all have that sort of relationship already? And look at how much good it’s done for humanity.”
