Marla wouldn’t let me finish. “We’ve heard that song many times before. Let’s not go over it again, John. Of course, the road could be long and the way dark. But there are tools available to deal with long roads and dark ways. Keep moving on and the road becomes shorter. Stay in the light and the darkness disappears. How do you do that? A close, personal relationship with the Chief, the God of all creation. There is nothing extraordinary about all this. It’s not that your problems will be less difficult. What will happen is that you’ll become much stronger, much more capable of dealing with the difficulties of life. You’ll live your life from a much higher point ofview.”

“Sure, John,” said Gideon,“it’s not always easy, but no one ever said this Earth journey was going to be easy. As they say, ‘they never promised you a rose garden.’But then again,the way I figure it, if you want the roses, you’ve got to put up with the thorns. If you want the highs of living, you’ve got to deal with the lows of life. Yet, by keeping close to the Almighty, the highs can become higher and the lows aren’t nearly as low as you once believed.”

“You both have been very patient with me,” I said. “You’ve shared many gems of wisdom over the years. Now you’ve told me the greatest secret in the universe and I’m very,very grateful. But I’m still a bit confused. I know that to live a life of joy, peace and fulfillment, one must develop a close, personal relationship with God. And I believe that this is true. But one thing you haven’t told me. How does one develop this relationship? How do you get to the point where this relationship becomes a natural thing in your life? Where do you start and how do you continue?”

“Like everything else, there are some simple rules,” Gideon replied. “Why don’t we get a cup of that great coffee you usually make? Then we’ll be able to go over how to develop some good habits — how to always be in the Presence of the Protector — how to always find safety, security and prosperity. Fair enough?”

“I can’t argue with that, Gideon. It’ll only take a few minutes to make the brew. Marla, would you like some fruit juice?”

“If you don’t mind, I’ll take coffee, John. There are times when I enjoy a steaming cup of the stuff. Do you need some help getting it together?”

“No thanks, I think I can handle it.”

They remained seated while I went to the kitchen and put on the coffee. Now I’ll find out all about the greatest secret in the universe. At last, I’ll learn how to use it to full advantage to fill my life with more joy than drudgery, more contentment than anxiety, more love than fear.
