Employee Drug Test (EDT) is one of the rising phenomena in the corporate scenario. Under this program, an organization pre-tests its employees before recruiting them. Besides, random drug checks are also done to detect cases of drug abuse amongst the team of present employees, bringing any such case to the notice of the management.

The implementation of a regular EDT program discourages the abuse of drugs, a problem that has gained alarming proportions. As drug abuse spreads like cancer, an EDT can help in the timely detection and eradication of the root of the problem. This brings about positive changes through multifarious avenues. Qualitative and quantitative improvement takes place in the tasks accomplished. Healthcare costs that have to be borne by the organization, are reduced. Other team members are saved from the scourge of drugs by EDT and this reduces costs arising from attrition.

Better working conditions and harmonious relations are also a by-product of EDT. By the confluence of these factors, the organization is benefited, which reflects in the form of the improving bottom line.

The trend of EDT is on the ascendance. This is verified by the study carried out by the various agencies. For instance a study shows that the implementation of EDT by Fortune 500 companies has gone up by approximately twenty percent. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has found that there has been a 50% rise in drug testing by companies while a similar research by the American Management Association shows that eighty seven percent of their members have made EDT mandatory in their respective offices. Another factor in favor of EDT is the passing of the Drug Free Workplace Act of 1998 by the House of Representatives, provides incentives to organizations making EDT compulsory for its personnel.

The initial costs of EDT may be high but the benefits, if translated into terms of cost efficiency and profit margins, more than recovers the investment required up front. And it is due to the lucre of these better profit margins that forward looking organizations are increasingly opting for EDT.
