One morning while sitting quietly at Mardai’s bedside, I was reflecting on the events that had brought us there. She was sleeping peacefully. Suddenly I became aware of a feeling that there were others present in the room.

Anxiously, I looked around. I saw no one, yet there was a definite perception of great activity. The temperature dropped a few degrees and there were sounds like the rustling of paper. I sat quietly as I tried to observe. A slight breeze brushed around me, and I thought I heard voices, somewhat muffled and distant, yet, seeming to come from within the room. Just as suddenly, it all disappeared and everything returned to normal.

It was only then that I realized some major changes were occurring. I was frightened by what might be happening. I was overcome by an ominous feeling that this was the beginning of the end. Mardai continued sleeping and, again, my mind wandered back in time. I wished that my father were there with me, but he had died a few years earlier. Even as I thought of him, I seemed to hear his voice say,“I am with you, son. I may be gone from physical Earth life, but I am with you in eternity. We are taking care of things.”

Tears came to my eyes. Where was the help that we are told is always with us? There are times when one is so overcome with despair that even thinking requires a tremendous effort. This was one such time. Exhausted and worried, I closed my eyes. When I opened them again, Mardai had awakened. She looked at me ever so lovingly, ever so tenderly, and softly said, “I’m so worried about you and the children. I don’t think I’m going to be able to win this time.”

“We must fight a little harder,” I said, trying to be brave as I held her hand and numbly sat for what seemed to be an eternity. Then it was time to go home to the children.
