For better or worse (or really worse), she’s been there to pick you up off the ground, shake the dirt off your clothes and give you a hug to make it all better.

No, it’s not your fiancé, it’s your Mom! She’s the person who helped make you everything you are today, so before you add another important woman in your life, take some time to thank her with unique Mother’s day gifts.

But how can you even begin to think of unique Mother’s day gifts for your almighty mother? Well, it won’t be easy, especially with your style (hello, plaid shorts and pink polo shirt do not go together!) However, you do have someone who can help you with that.

Talk to you fiancé (and her mother, if you can stand her) to get some ideas for unique Mother’s day gifts. They are both female, well, you know your fiancé is a female, you’re not so sure about your future mother-in-law, and can give you ideas that would impress them if they were your Mother. Ideally, some of their ideas for unique Mother’s day gifts will resonate with you and you’ll think of some ideas.

Also, think about what you’ve give her in the past. Remember that toaster? And that pair of bunny slippers? Yeah, don’t get her stuff like that. She hated it, and who can blame her? The toaster burned her bread and the slippers were so ugly that she let the dog eat them.

Instead, you’re looking for unique Mother’s day gifts. What does she like to do? Does she enjoy the water? Give her gift certificates for scuba diving lessons.

Does she enjoy the outdoors? Treat her to a picnic in the country along with horseback riding. They have helmets, in case you fall off.

Or does she like to read? If so, give her the top 20 books on the New York Times best seller list. Those unique Mother’s day gifts will keep her busy for months.

The most important word here is unique. Unique means thinking outside the ordinary, outside what the popular gift is. Save the new necklace and patriotic-patterned shirt for Christmas. Oh wait, never mind. Do not give her that, ever!

So break out your thinking cap and really spend some time thinking about what unique Mother’s day gifts you can give to your Mom this year. She’s been there for you through thick and thin, intelligence and stupidity and the good and bad times. Take the time to show her that you really do care once in awhile. She’s worth it.
