I moved several times in the past few years, from across town to thousands of miles away. I’ve learned a lot. The last time I moved a friend of mine said, “Oh my, you are so organized, you should right a book to help people like me who get so stressed from all this.” OK, so it’s not a book, but I hope this series of articles helps you to get to your new address with less stress and more organization.

When preparing for a move there are few things you need to do up front.

If you are moving a short distance, some of these tips will not apply, like giving notice at your job. If you are able to go from your old address to your new one in a short amount of time, something like water or cable service will not be a problem. You will be able to use them at your new address if you run into problems leaving your old one.

Number one is DECIDE ON A DATE. This is crucial, as this date will trigger dates for many upcoming tasks such as renting a truck, opening new bank account, canceling utility accounts and giving notice at your job.

IF YOU ARE MOVING OUT OF THE AREA

BANKING

Check to see if your bank has a local branch in your new community. If it does, don’t forget to notify them of your new address. You may want to order new checks with your new address and phone number on them. If not, open an account with a bank in your new locale. When opening a new account the bank will send checks and an ATM card to your new address. This usually takes 7-10 business days (check with your new bank for their processing schedule). You do not want to open a new account if you will not be at your new address when your checks and ATM card arrive. Many banks will let you open an account on-line. Opening an account online will allow you to do so before you leave your old address. Time it right and you will be at your new address to receive your checks & ATM card. Make the minimum deposit required and when you get to your new address, your account will be ready to do business with checks printed with your new address, an ATM card to access your funds at the local bank, deposit funds from your old bank account, and set up direct deposit for your new job.

Look for the rest of the Stress LESS Move series of articles for helpful information on making your move as painless as possible.

Good Luck! See you in The Stress LESS Move, Part 2: The Truck.
