"Dogs are a man best friend" is a common phrase that we all have heard at some point in our lives. As a dog owner for the past 30 years, I have grown quite fond of my house dogs. I currently have 2 Maltese Poodle mixes that look more like poodles but these two have stolen my heart in such a way I feel nothing is too good for my four legged friends. I love and care for my pets as if they were my children in the sense that they have a medical plan and their diet is strickly wholesome pet food. People food is never fed to them and they are groomed on a regular basis, teeth brushing included. Although I do not spend money on buying them clothes other than jackets or sweaters for winter walks, I do tend to spoil them with the little extras.

Some dog owners speak of their pets in a sense that if you didn't know them you would think they were talking about their children. I recently found myself trying to explain to someone why I, personally, would spend $7.99 to buy a doggie treat that resembles the In & Out Burger & Fries or $21.99 for doggie spa set. My dogs are my companions. They are theraputic in the sense that regardless of the type of day I have had when I come home to my little furry friends all is forgotten. They are my training partners eagerly reminding me that it is time for our daily jog and when it is time to relax they happily accomodate by laying quietly until our somber time is done, try getting your kids to sit or lay quietly with you until you are ready to get up. I can almost guarantee that they will be ready to move before you.

The one common mistake some dog lovers make is they feel like they are treating their dogs when they give them human treats i.e. ice cream, doughnuts, cakes, hamburgers & hotdogs. Although your pets may love these items it is not good for their health. A woman recently told me that her Chow is very finiky she would not eat anything, she said "I give her Burger King and McDonalds but she wont eat it so I tried Wendy's and she loved it, can you believe my dog loves Wendy's" Yikes!!! I tried to hold back the shock in my face as I tried to explain those foods are not good for any dogs. Although it may be ok to give your dog meats like chicken, beef or lamb boiled and unseasoned, feeding them fast food or fatty processed snacks are not good for maintaining a healthy dog or person for that matter. I told her she should try to make her own gourment snacks for her Chow since she enjoys treating her dog and she should really begin feeding her Chow wholesome dog food.

Now that my children are grown and I have yet to be a grandmother, I spend most of my free time with my pets. Gourmet specialty dog treats are a real treat for any pet. Treats that are made with wholesome ingrediants, human quality grade ingrediants, is about as close to human food my pets will evey receive. I love to enjoy my Cannoli at the same time my pets can enjoy a tasty dog treat that resembles a Cannoli and I know the treats they are eating will not compromise their health.

So the next time or the first time a person approaches a dog owner and asks why would you spend so much money on your dog? Simply respond because they don't expect me to and their loyalty and affection is unmatched.
