Deciding to rent an apartment may be a bit difficult particularly if the individual's is on a tight budget. This isn’t only about your lease payment and the other items that must be paid every month but also the maintenance costs should the individual is determined to make a few decorative changes.

When a person leases an apartment, the apartment owner will usually request for a deposit and a months rent to get the apartment. The deposit will only be refunded when the contract ends if there is no (or little) repair needed before the unit can be rented by another tenant.

Here are a few cost-saving tips for decorating an apartment;

1. Should a person have any posters, a wonderful idea is to use straight pins to stop them from falling from the walls. If they are framed, try to use the smallest nail you can find so that when the lease agreement ends the holes will be easy to fix using a spackling compound.

2. If the apartment is completely furnished, the furniture should be covered to avoid it from getting dirty or stained. The apartment owner will check before allowing a renter to leave.

3. Purchasing a disposable rug or carpet would be better than an expensive one to protect the floor. If the carpet is soiled or stained it can be disposed of because of the low cost.

4. If the chairs in the house are covered with fabric, you may consider purchasing some machine washable cushions to avoid any damage.

5. When looking at the apartment, there is a possibility that there are cracks or holes in the walls from the prior tenant. A renter can repaint or apply wallpaper only with permission from the property owner. In most cases it will not be allowed and if this happens the renter can hide the flaws by using decorative frames and pictures.

Most property owners who will allow repainting will specify the color which is generally an off white paint color. A renter should make sure there is sufficient paint saved for any touch up that needs to be done at a later time.

People who want privacy may want to use curtains that can be hung using spring tension rods. These are both easier to assemble and disassemble than your typical curtain rods.

When starting out on a small budget, cover all the basics first and you will save money and have fun decorating the apartment. It will also help make the apartment a enjoyable place to live until you are ready to relocate elsewhere.
