Decision making appears to be a skill that many people have a difficult time mastering. There are so many individuals who seem to have a rough time even making the simplest of decisions. For them, deciding what to eat for lunch is a monumental task. This indecisiveness creates a great amount of conflict in their lives. The mental energy spent and the time lost due to this is massive.

When studying top performers in any field, it is quickly realized that much of the success is attributed to the ability to make certain decisions. To start, they determine a purpose in the form of a major goal. For example, Tiger Woods set out to eclipse all of Jack Nicklaus' career records. Olympic champions spend years practicing their craft while concentrating on the gild medal. Rock bands spend hours and hours practicing in an effort to get signed by a record label. Their purpose allows them to proceed forward with complete passion. They overcome all obstacles and distractions.

The successful also have the ability to make decisions rapidly. They spend the necessary time accumulating all the information to make an informed choice. However, the decision is made once is can be reasonably done so. This begins the process of moving towards a possible outcome. Even a wrong decision nets results since it provides data that the present path is wrong. The worst possible choice is to make no decision at all. Of course, as the old saying goes, “no decision is a decision”. It is the selection to stand pat.

To truly excel, we need to exert all of our mental energy in those areas that create the greatest movement towards the desired outcome. Decisions left hanging drain us of this vital resource. It is impossible to move forward mentally when there is an issue left unresolved. When we put off making a choice, our mental faculties focus directly upon that situation. There might be times where it moves to the back of our consciousness. However, it will invariably creep into our thought process when we least expect it. Suddenly, the energy we were going to use at that moment for something else is divided. Making decisions immediately allows the successful to maintain their focus on those areas that are most important.

There are many reasons why people put off decisions. Often, fear of making the wrong decision paralyzes. One is so concerned that the situation will not work out that nothing is done. Stalling seems like a reasonable thing to do. Unfortunately, in life. decisions of any importance only get magnified the longer they are avoided. Ignoring the fear of being wrong is critical. An individual must be able to choose an option in spite of what the mind is saying.

Like any other talent, making decisions becomes easier with practice. Similar to a muscle, the more it is used, the stronger it becomes. Simultaneously, it will get weaker the less it is exerted. People enter a state of paralysis in their decision making ability when they allow long periods of time to pass without using their power of choice. They get into situations where others make all selections for them. Over time, their fear gets greater when confronted with a circumstance where a decision is necessary. The “muscle” is so out of practice that it cannot handle the load being put upon it.

We need to practice being assertive in our decision making. Understanding that a wrong choice is not the end of the world enables us to move forward with a larger amount of confidence. It gets easier by starting with the circumstances that are smaller in scope. Rapidly deciding what to do for lunch, what to wear, and what movie to see provides strength. As our ability grows in these areas, we can undertake the larger choices. Fortunately, the process is the same-gather the relevant information, make a choice, and then determine whether it is working or not. This skill will make our days filled with greater success. Free up that extra mental energy by supercharging your decisions.
